Nomad Life: Three Nights with a Herding Family

Eight days around Issyk-Kul with three nights living alongside a nomad family in the mountains: milking, riding with the herders and soaking in a natural hot spring.

Overview

Most trips stop at a yurt for tea and move on. This one stays. For three nights you live with a herding family in the high pastures above the south shore of Issyk-Kul: you help with the morning milking, make fresh cream, butter and boorsok bread, ride out with the herders and wash the day off in a natural hot spring.

Around those days is an easy loop of the lake: the Burana tower and a golden eagle hunter on the way in, the red rocks of Skazka canyon, a ridge walk above Jeti-Oguz, and two relaxed days in Karakol with a forest gorge hike and a cooking class with a Dungan family.

Who it suits

Travellers who want real time with local people rather than sights from a car window. The walking is easy and no riding experience is needed. Life with the family is simple: no shower (the hot spring is close by), an outdoor toilet and no phone signal for three nights.

Day-by-day itinerary

D1 Bishkek – Burana tower – Bokonbaevo

Arrive in Bishkek the day before: the transfer from Manas airport and your first hotel night are included, so you start rested.
Drive east to the 11th-century Burana minaret and its stone balbals, then follow Issyk-Kul to its quiet south shore. In the afternoon a berkutchi shows how he hunts with his golden eagle. About 5 hours of driving with stops. Night in a guesthouse in Bokonbaevo.

D2 Skazka canyon – meeting your nomad hosts

A morning walk by the lake, then Skazka, the Fairy Tale canyon, where wind has carved red and orange rock into castles and dragons. Lunch with a family in Barskoon, then up into the mountains to meet your hosts and watch the herd come home. Night with the family.

D3 Life with the family

Help with the morning milking, make kaimak cream and butter, and fry boorsok together. Afternoon free to walk the pastures, then a soak in the natural hot spring. Night with the family.

D4 A day with the horses

Half a day on horseback with the family's herders at a calm pace suited to beginners, then cook dinner together. Night with the family.

D5 Jeti-Oguz ridge – Karakol

Say goodbye to your hosts and hike the ridge above the red cliffs of Jeti-Oguz. Continue to Karakol for a hot shower and a comfortable hotel.

D6 Karakol gorge and a Dungan cooking class

A walk through spruce forest along the Karakol river, then the wooden Orthodox cathedral and the Dungan mosque built without nails. In the evening, cook ashlyanfu and other Dungan dishes in a family home.

D7 A slow day in Karakol

Free day: an optional horse ride or hike in the valleys around town, the animal market on Sunday, or simply rest.

D8 Karakol – Cholpon-Ata – Bishkek

Along the north shore to the open-air petroglyphs of Cholpon-Ata, with an optional boat trip on the lake, then back to Bishkek for your flight or an extra night.
